LED “task” lighting?

I also asked this in the eggers egg-bot group on facebook, but I’m hoping to ask a broader audience here:

Have any of you added any white LEDs to illuminate the egg and pen plotting area?
Electrically I know how to do it, but what I am wondering is where to
put a couple-or-three LEDs to best illuminate the area.

Did you use surface mount or did you use 3 mm or 5 mm regular lensed LEDs? Did you
use a higher-power LED?  What worked for you?
